Although the term "shire" may be applicable to Scottish Counties, it is more traditional to refer to each County by its principal area name (excluding the "shire"). The addition of "shire" is more often associated with in the English-settled areas. English (and Welsh) Counties often use the term "shire", although not always used there either, these days.

In fact, in Scotland, even the word "County" was not adopted initially. The origins of area names (including later Counties in Scotland, and Shires) came more from mormaerdoms (Kingdoms), stewartries (towns, areas and lands joined administratively) and sheriffdoms (identical to later counties which were regions in which a sheriff has authority, from the High Middle Ages). Although "county" appears in some texts, "shire" was principally used in many areas, until Counties for statutory purposes were created in the 19th Century.

The VRG trusts that helps somewhat in explaining a little of the confusion and multiple refernces to areas (modern day counties), by several possible terms. These days, neither the term "county" nor "shire," may actually be associated (or used) with the current actual 'administrative county name' in Scotland.

Both the The Guide and Profile Pages can be viewed individually. When we add other areas to the guide we will also include a general site search facility too!
